Back in 1776, our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence -- an event we celebrate every 4th of July. That spirit of independence is definitely something worth commemorating, but also something worth emulating. How independent are you, really?

While money isn't everything, and it certainly can't buy happiness, the having or not having of it can definitely impact your lifestyle. You've no doubt heard the term "independently wealthy." Perhaps you've even used it before. But what does it really mean?

In plain terms, it means having enough wealth not to need employment, nor financial support from any other person. So basically, it's what most Americans are aiming for when they begin to plan for their retirement.
